Heating FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q: How often should I change my filter?

You should check it at least every 30 days. While the manufacturer may recommend changing it every 90 days, the simple truth is you change it when it is dirty. As dry as the weather is here some filters may not last two weeks. Add pets and high traffic to some homes and you would be surprised how quickly filters get dirty. Keeping filters changed regularly throughout the year is important for good air flow and is one of those minor maintenance efforts that can prolong the life of your system and save you money in costly repairs. Pleated filters are better than flat filters.

  • Q: What does HVAC stand for?

    Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.

  • Q: How can I reduce my utility bills?

When it comes to reducing utility bills, the best tactic is to take a whole-home approach. This means contacting an expert home performance company in the Coquitlam and lower mainland area like Moe’s plumbing drainage & heating for a thorough inspection. We may recommend that you take some or all of the following steps to reduce your utility bills:

    • Upgrade to a high-efficiency unit
    • Get duct inspection & repair
    • Upgrade your insulation
    • Get annual maintenance for your system
    • Close vents when rooms aren’t in use
    • Use a programmable thermosta
  • Q: What are the advantages of a programmable thermostat?

Because they are electronic, programmable thermostats are more accurate and efficient than thermostats that contain mercury. Plus, they allow you to automatically control the temperature in your home at different times of day without ever touching your thermostat.

  • Q: Is indoor air quality (IAQ) a health and safety concern?

Indoor air quality has become an important health and safety concern.

Common issues associated with IAQ include:

    • Improper or inadequately maintained heating and ventilation systems.
    • Contamination by construction materials, glues, fibreglass, particle boards, paints, chemicals, etc.
    • Increase in number of building occupants and time spent indoors.
  • Q: What symptoms are often linked to poor indoor air quality?

It is common for people to report one or more of the following symptoms:

    • Dryness and irritation of the eyes, nose, throat, and skin
    • Headache
    • Fatigue
    • Shortness of breath
    • Hypersensitivity and allergies
    • Sinus congestion
    • Coughing and sneezing
    • Dizziness
    • Nausea

People generally notice their symptoms after several hours at work and feel better after they have left the building or when they have been away from the building for a weekend or a vacation.

Many of these symptoms may also be caused by other health conditions including common colds or the flu, and are not necessarily due to poor IAQ. This fact can make identifying and resolving IAQ problems more difficult.

  • Q: How often should I change the filter in my heater?

In general, Moe’s recommends that you replace your disposable filters at once a month. If you have washable filters, they should be cleaned once a month. However, some homes may require more frequent filter changes due to conditions within the home.

  • Q: Where is my filter located?

Your air filter should be located in either the blower compartment of the furnace, in an attached filter case, or in a return air grille in a wall or ceiling of your home.

  • Q: What type of filter should I use for my furnace and how often should it be replaced?

The correct size and model for the space provided is best—make sure it is not too restrictive. The replacement time may vary, depending on the quality of the filter and if you own pets, have allergies, or allow smoking in your Coquitlam home. It could range from once a month to once a year depending on the product and the special situations mentioned above. Feel free to consult our knowledgeable technicians if you are unsure.

  • Q: Should I have maintenance services for my furnace?

Yes, scheduling an annual maintenance service for your furnace will keep your warranty intact. It will also increase the efficiency of your unit, which will ultimately reduce your operating costs and extend the life of your unit. There’s an important safety reason for maintenance, too. If your furnace or its parts are old or in need of a repair, there’s a higher chance of a carbon monoxide leak. We recommend coquitlam homeowners opt for proactive maintenance because it allows us to detect potential issues before they turn into bigger safety concerns.

  • Q: Why is it important to have the coils on my HVAC units cleaned regularly?

Even when air filters are changed regularly, some heat transfer coils will still require annual cleaning. Units with dirty coils do not transfer heat effectively which results in the units working harder and longer to do the required amount of heating or cooling. When the unit works harder, it uses more energy and stresses the equipment leading to expensive repairs. Coil cleaning will save money in both energy and repairs, and reduce your environmental footprint.
